Artist's Statement

Seeing a beautiful natural subject, be it a flower, a child’s face, or a scenic landscape is my inspiration to create realistic transparent watercolor paintings. Subjects that are brilliantly highlighted or glow in the sweet light of dawn or dusk are just begging to be studied, appreciated, and painted in a realistic style. Truly seeing the world around me involves thoughtful observation of shapes, values, contrast, edges, temperature and color. This creative vision is intermingled with emotion and both are incorporated into the final product.
The painting materials I use are the finest artist’s quality materials available, though are an insignificant expense compared to the time and energy invested to produce each meaningful, quality piece of artwork. I may spend weeks, months, or sometimes even years contemplating and composing a painting in my mind before I ever pick up a brush. When I finally begin painting, I work quite deliberately, consciously employing both traditional and innovative techniques, but my unconscious remains the undisputed project manager. I live with the painting-in-progress in constant view between studio sessions, planning the next layers carefully to be sure the painting continues to tell the intended story. My paintings are sincere, passionate, and executed with great care, works of fine art that buyers can proudly add to their collections.
